Worried about alcohol withdrawal?!?!?

I am beginning to wonder if I am an alcoholic. I drink four to five mixed drinks at night, usually after work, usually between 11-2. .. then I go to bed and do it all again the next night.. but this is every night … I don't really crave this alcohol, I only know that without it I will have a great difficulty sleeping… then the other night I went to bed after two glasses of wine, passed out for three hours, woke up to go to the bathroom, then laid in bed hallucinating and falling in and out of bad dreams for hours .. I couldn't tell my dreams from reality and was hearing voices while awake… does this mean DTs? this is the first time this has happened to me … but I have been drinking like that for close to 2 years .. I am very young and certainly don't wake up in the morning craving alcohol or anything … is there anything I can do to avoid detox? Is there any hope of a safe at home detox?? My job is very prolific in the community and I could not handle entering a detox center (or afford it) … I think for the time being I am going to try a weaning method, I am just scared of having a seizure? Does that seem likely for someone like me, that drinks as I do?? I need help.

all i know is that you cant do it alone. i have some friends who are in detox and one did have a seizure. from what i understand its more dangerous to detox from alcohol than drugs. It sounds to me like although you might too much that you aren't an alcoholic. But the fact that you drink several drinks every night and have trouble sleeping without it shows that you could develop a problem.

You should definitely try to change your habits before you have a real problem, I don't think that you need to be afraid of having seizure or anything. maybe talk to your doctor or someone you trust about it so that you have someone to call if you think you're in trouble.

Don't try to do this alone, like the last responder if you can't get in somewhere at least get someone there with you to watch you. I do not know if you have a problem or not, but you are describing a pattern of heavy use (five or more drinks in five or more separate incidents in a one month period). also if you lack the financial resources, you can get yourself to an AA meeting, their free and they can give you the resources to help you prevent a relapse.

Alcohol withdrawal MUST be medically managed. you have been drinking daily for 2 years, so your body is dependent on alcohol. if you stop "cold turkey" you risk life-threatening seizures (DTs). you feel that detox is not possible and that you "could not handle" it. Well, I think you are an alcoholic and good for you for wanting to stop. I think you should look into AA where you have a support system. will power is one thing, but until you are in a real crisis you will no doubt find a good or bad reason to start drinking again. When I quit drinking I was at the stage where my hands shook without a drink and the only thing I could do was worry that I would not run out of booze and how I would be able to safely drive to the liquour store to buy more. I was a night drinker like you and never missed work. I retired from work after 35 years and a drink became my new friend. I got Pancreatitis and had to go to the hospital and ended up in detox for a week. I don't know if weaning works or not. just make sure you drink a lot of water so you don't get dehydrated. I don't think you had the DTs and I think you will be okay otherwise. if not, call 911 and go in to the hospital. It wouldn't hurt to have a family member stay with you. on occasion in my younger days, I would quit for a week or so with no bad physical consequences. My Mother's husband gave it up after many years of drinking every day without and physical consequences. you can always have some liquour in the house just in case.
