Charleston is the second largest city in the United States state of South Carolina with a population of 120,083, according to the 2010 census.  Charleston is known as “the Holy City” because of is beautiful churches and magnificent steeples that dot the city’s skyline. Out of the thirteen original colonies, Charleston was one of the cities t to provide religious tolerance, albeit restricted to non-Catholics, allowing Jews to practice their faith without restriction. Such a beautiful, religious city is being plagued by Heroin addiction. Brought in from Mexico and other states by car, train, plane and boat. Despite anti-drug laws and the efforts of local police, drugs are circulating the streets of Charleston with Heroin at the top for abuse.

Heroin is a very powerful opiate and one of the most addictive substances out there. one of the reasons that it is so addictive and powerful is that it acts so quickly. in less than eight seconds of injecting heroin directly into your blood stream, you can feel the initial effects, such as euphoria, flushing and heaviness in hands and feet, the effects from one dose can last for hours. Heroin can be smoked or sniffed, but the most popular method is injecting the drug into the vein. the body builds up a tolerance to heroin requiring higher doses of the drug in order to feel the same effects. Heroin is extremely dangerous, since it is processed from naturally occurring morphine, it is usually mixed with other substances, making it even more dangerous. Heroin use has drastic effects on the body. It causes alternating states of alertness and drowsiness when in use, clouding ones judgment.

There are long term health effects associated with heroin substance abuse. the heart, lungs, kidneys and liver can suffer irreversible damage as a result from prolonged heroin use. It is extremely common that heroin addicts have collapsed veins, due to repeated injections. Blood born diseases are commonly spread by Heroin users, such as HIV/AIDS and hepatitis. Chronic use of Heroin can be fatal. Heroin claims most of its users lives by overdose. Vomiting, stomach contractions and muscle spasms are all signs of heroin overdose. Breathing patterns are slowed and eventually brought to the point that it stops, the blood pressure drops dramatically and delirium sets in. Heroin overdose can even result in coma, an over dose can be fatal.

There is help out there for your addiction…

There are rehab programs in Charleston South Carolina that will help you fight this overwhelming addiction. Since Heroin is so addictive and builds a tolerance so easily the body begins to become dependent on the drug feeling withdrawal symptoms when stopping use. these symptoms of withdrawal can be very severe. Symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cold flashes, muscle spasms, physical pain in the bones and muscles, as well as intense cravings, sleeplessness and restlessness.

The symptoms of withdrawal from heroin substance abuse requires its own form of treatment. Usually a combination of drugs and behavioral therapy will help releave the symptoms. Methadoney (most commonly used), Buprenorphine, Naltrexone and Naloxone are drugs used to treat heroin addiction.  Recommendations have been made by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to increase the availability of pharmacological to help treat heroin substance abuse. Behavioral therapy is also used to treat heroin addiction. Typically used in conjunction with the pharmacological treatment. Heroin addicts often require time in a rehab to go threw the detox process and receive medications to help control the symptoms, receiving counseling to help get to the root of the addiction.

There is help out there to help you win the battle of addiction. Contact a rehab program in Charleston South Carolina today.

Will a drugs detox program hurt my baby?

I am on a detox program for my addiction to heroin. I've been on it almost two weeks and I'm planning to stick to it as in the past I would only half complete it but I'm doing the whole thing for my baby, myself and Ty – my boyfriend.

But I'm just wondering if the detox program will hurt my baby? I was on heroin for the first few weeks of pregnancy but I'm not taking it anymore and I'm almost 3 months pregnant.

From what I found on the internet (and I'm not sure it's reliable, but you never know), detox is generally safe while pregnant if it's for a non-opiate derived drug; but it's pretty unsafe and can actually be fatal if it's for a drug derived from opiates. Heroin is an opiate-derived drug, so they say that methadone is the best way to stay off heroin during a pregnancy, but that the baby MAY be born addicted to methadone and might need a 2-week weaning off period after birth, but it's the safest way for the baby.

Congratultaions for staying off heroin, and congratulations for taking control of your addiction. My recommendation is to go to a clinic or a doctor and see if you can't get more medical advice, because I really don't know much beyond what the internet tells me. if there's a planned Parenthood in your area, they have trained staff that might be able to give you the information you need, maybe even over the phone. Good luck!

I have read that it can be hard on the baby and can cause a miscarriage so it is something you need to do under close monitoring for your babys sake, but its better to take the chance and get clean now for you and your baby than it would be to keep subjecting your baby to heroin if you would start back up again. Good job, and just remember that you are doing it for your baby, and you need to take special care and make sure you are doing it and being monitored for problems with the baby, but it can be done!

the ppl helping you with the program know you are pregnant, they should be helping you, monitoring you and the baby..to ensure nothing goes wrong. it can and will be a struggle for both of you since you both especialy since were still using when you were first pregnant…your baby then too was using too…( so that means you are both going thru detox) anyway….with the proper care from counselors and doctors and keeping things monitored…everything should come out ok….just make sure to stay clean for your lilone so you both can have a happy healthy clean life with your boyfriend/the father….

Good Luck to you and your lilone.
