Gwyneth Paltrow's Detox Specialist Shares His Healthy Detox Tips

Gwyneth Paltrow is not only known for her acting skills but her healthy lifestyle.  Sharing her body secrets, Starlounge spoke with her detox specialist Dr. Alejandro Junger, who is also a New York cardiologist and the founder of ‘The clean Program’.

"Gwyneth has a deep passion for health and wellness," Dr Junger tells Starlounge.

“The program is an amazingly effective way to detox, something which she is passionate about.

“Cleansing positively impacts women like Gwyneth’s lives because it provides an opportunity for a reset. it restores the body’s own natural ability to heal itself.”

Dr Junger even helps Gwyneth with her healthy lifestyle website.

“On her weekly newsletter, Goop.com, Gwyneth is always connecting with people who are in this same space,” he explains. “She had expressed her interest in cleansing and so I designed her a protocol. the protocol for everyone is the same.

“Everyone does the 21-day Rebuild or Renew Cleanse which helps women like Gwyneth work and exercise regularly whilst they are detoxing.”

So what does the 21-day program consist of?

  • a liquid shake for breakfast with vitamin, mineral and protein supplementation included
  • a solid lunch that consists of specific foods (excluding processed foods and allergens)
  • and a liquid meal or shake for dinner

“There are additional supplements that are taken conveniently with every meal as well,” adds Dr Junger. the clean Program was primarily devised to repair any damage caused by toxicity in the environment.“Sadly, there are chemicals everywhere,” he explains.

“In the food we eat, in the air that we breathe, and in the water we drink. It’s all part of ‘global toxicity. “My program is all about getting the bodies natural process restored. When there is an accumulation of toxins in the body, it will use a lot of energy to cleanse and we will often tire.

“Toxins also lead to over production of mucus and the storage of fat. “Allergies, headaches, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue, weight gain and insomnia are just a few of the symptoms from the accumulation of toxins. my program repairs the gut and gets rid of the toxins."

Dr. Junger’s top Health Food Tips:

  • Green Vegetable Juice: Helps gear up for detox (juicing cucumber, celery, spinach and hint of apple
  • Wild Caught Colder Water Fish like salmon, trout: good source of EPA-DHA and protein to support the liver with all the extra work it does to cleanse (if you are not vegetarian)
  • pirulina: a fantastic algae-based food supplement that has more protein kilo per kilo than steak. Tastes amazing when mixed.
  • Unsweetened Almond Milk: a great base for your smoothies and shakes (instead of having milk)
  • Lemon-Water: most people are chronically dehydrated. So even though water is thought of as a super-food, it really is because people just don’t drink enough of it.

Benzodiazepine Detox

(Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, Librium, Ativan, Restoril, ect.)

The family of benzodiazepines, from this point referred to as “benzos”, are medications used for a variety of clinical purposes.  Anxiety, sleep, muscle relaxant, and as anticonvulsants are a few of the reasons they are prescribed.  However certain drugs, particularly Xanax (generically known as Alprazolam), have become a popular drug of abuse.  most commonly, you will hear them referred to as ‘bars’, ‘sticks’, ‘fries’, ‘smarties’, ‘ladders’, ‘green goblins’, ‘hulks’, ‘footballs’ and many other creative terms.  This class of drugs can be quite beneficial when used for certain conditions, but when abused, can be extremely dangerous and at times deadly.

When benzos such as Xanax and Valium are used on a regular basis, whether as prescribed or obtained by other means, they easily become addictive.  This class of medications is by far the most dangerous of any drug to detoxify from.  Benzos are similar to alcohol in respect to detox.  if one consistently uses benzos and abruptly stops the user will, in 9 out of 10 cases, have a grand mal seizure.*

This can occur within hours of the onset of withdrawal or days or weeks later.  Consider the danger associated with this: when the seizure occurs, a person may be driving, operating machinery, or caring for children or the elderly.  also, the possibility of a head injury from a fall when the seizure occurs may cause severe bleeding within the brain, which may result in death.  This is why we are very careful regarding benzo detox.

There are two methods of detoxification with this class of drug.  one is rapid detox, which must be done as an inpatient in a hospital or detox center under the care of a physician certified in addiction medicine.  for many, this may be financially prohibitive.  if you have health insurance and would like to proceed in this direction, you should check with your insurance carrier to find out if this type of treatment will be covered.

The second method, which we use at RSPB, is a slower method using equivalent dosages of one of the ‘self-tapering’ benzos.  Using conversion tables, we will ‘migrate’ a patient onto one of these medications, decreasing the dosage in safe increments so as to prevent any adverse side effects or discomfort.  This method may take more time, but it can be safely and easily managed on an outpatient basis as long as an anti-seizure medicine is prescribed along with the detox.  By ‘weaning’ off these medications, counseling will be an integral part of recovery.

In therapy, we will help you discover the core issues behind your addiction, which will make this a positive self-discovery experience as well.  This is why, at Recovery Solutions, our method of treating the “whole” patient, not just the drugs they take.  Our counselors are wellversed in therapeutic aspects of counseling during benzo detox.  You can entrust you family member to Recovery Solutions, for we care for them as is they are our family.

*A type of seizure in which the electrical activity within the entire brain is interrupted.  During the first phase, a person will quickly lose consciousness, muscles will tense, and the extremities will become rigid, causing a person to fall if standing.  During the 2nd phase, the muscles will begin to involuntarily contract and relax rapidly, causing ‘convulsions’.  This may last for as long as 5 minutes.  After this phase of the seizure is over, a person may become incontinent, that is losing control of bladder function.  This final phase is known as the post-ictal phase and may last an hour or longer.  the danger lies in that during the onset of the seizure, a person may fall and sustain a life-threatening head injury, or may be driving at the time.

Why I Support Managed Alcohol Programs

I have to start this post by first asking you all to keep an open mind. I understand often the harm reduction model is not easy to accept. I, myself, do not believe I would have found sobriety in such a program, but I was lucky. By the time I hit the streets I had gone through a detox. Some people are not so lucky and drugs and alcohol have complete control over them.

Trying to help a homeless friend in Los Angeles is what changed my mind, and why I requested to visit such a facility.  My friend has been homeless since his mother died.  After years of trying to drinking his pain away there is not much of my friend left.  Alcohol has completely taken over his life. His liver is damaged so much there are sores on his leg. The sores are so bad he cannot wear pants. he ties bandannas around his leg so the sores are not visible. Any normal person would have stopped drinking. but my homeless friend cannot stop on his own. he will die homeless because Los Angeles has yet to adopt the harm reduction model. Any absence based program WILL NOT WORK for my friend. it breaks my heart!

This week I visited an a managed alcohol program in Ottawa, Canada. The Oaks Residence is a unique partnership between the Shepherds of good Hope, inner City Health and Canadian Mental Health Association. Residents are given an hourly “dose” of alcohol in a clean and safe supervised environment. At first I was a little shocked walking in. all the residents were carrying cups, which I knew were filled with booze. but as I started to watch them I saw something gorgeous. The people who use and need this type program are the worst of the worst, like my friend in Los Angeles. they would be outside drinking anyway, and drinking Listerine and hand sanitizer. they would be DYING on the streets. Here, everyone was clean, and healthy, and safe. they were inside and not a burden to public safety issues. I was very impressed with the community there. what impressed me the most is I saw lives being saved (and money too).

This interview is with Joe, and manager at Shepherds of good Hope. what follows is a story one of the clients wrote, and Billy ‘insisted’ I read it. please watch this video with an open mind then read Billy’s story. Supporting managed alcohol treatment is a very good thing and we need more programs like this!

Hi, My name is Bill. I’ve come from the States to Canada. I’ve lived a rough life by my own choice. I’m nearly 39 years old. After all the street lives I’ve lived, I ended up finally, at The Oaks which has changed my mind about the government. I can’t believe they allow a piece of heaven for the lost. I’m an alcoholic in serious proportions and I need help physically and mentally. The Oaks and MAP and the WET program have provided the extreme positive and comfortable environment available to the public.

This program is based from the downtown core. -Not good-and moved to the West end of Ottawa away from the mess. By mess I mean alcohol, beer, drugs, crime, prostitution, anger, frustration, dependency, hunger, violence, police brutality and bothersomeness. Mainly I mean for everyone, basically stress.

At the Oaks I am a man who can think, concentrate, focus, make plans for the future, reflect on the past and myself. one day I may write a book reflecting on the things I’ve done and seen and probably sell it to High Schools to scare them straight. but for now, I’ll try to be a man trying to figure out a plan for my life. The World must thank the inner City Staff for their dedication and care for all the ailments that alcoholics and addicts suffer from.

Anderson Cooper talks with the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills about Rusell Armstrong’s suicide

by Rachel Quigley

Last updated at 6:50 PM on 10th September 2011

News anchor-turned talk show host: CNN’s Anderson Cooper

Anderson Cooper’s new daytime show is set to get off to an emotional start as he talks to the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills both about Russell Armstrong’s suicide and the suicide of his own brother.

The self-titled show, Anderson, will premiere on Monday and the reality show stars are among his first guests.

Speaking before the show is aired, Cooper said he did not book them as a ratings-grabber but revealed they had been asked before the tragic death of mr Armstrong – husband of Housewives’ star Taylor.

With his suicide so fresh on their minds Cooper said he was surprised they didn’t cancel, adding that they spend half the show talking about mr Armstrong.

He said: ‘It was something we had booked months ago… I thought frankly they were going to cancel, and they didn’t.’

According to Radar Online, the silver-haired news anchor said that he and the cast spent ‘probably half the show talking about Russell’s suicide and whether or not the show should be on the air at all, and whether they bear any responsibility or that reality TV bears any responsibility in what happened to him’.

He then opens up about his brother Carter’s suicide, who jumped to his death from the 14th-floor of a new York city penthouse when he was just 23. Cooper was 21 at the time.

Guests: Anderson Cooper’s chat show premieres on Monday when he will interview The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Mitch Winehouse

Happier times: TV star Taylor Armstrong with her late husband Russell Armstrong before he died

Speaking about the emotional time in his life he said: ‘I had a brother that committed suicide and that was more than twenty years ago and I’m still trying to figure out why he committed suicide.

‘I think anyone who survives suicide, that’s one of the horrible things about it, you can’t pinpoint one thing necessarily always that did it.

‘You can’t put yourself in someone else’s mind, a mind that is not acting rationally or not thinking rationally.’

Though the CNN journalist did not know Russell personally, he speculated as to what might have made him take his own life.

He said: ‘I think there’s other aspects to Russell’s life which really weren’t talked about on the show at all, but are clearly a part of what happened.

‘I think his business life was in disarray, he was deeply in debt, he was being sued, he had already pleaded guilty to fraud charges years ago.

‘I think it’s telling his business partner committed suicide the following day. So, I have no idea what was going on in his business life, but it certainly seems, the fact that his business partner committed suicide the next day, would certainly point to something in his business life not going well.’

Russell Armstrong was found dead at the age of 47 at his Los Angeles home on August 15.

Special show: There were tears on the first episode of the new season of Housewives as the girls got together to talk about Russell Armstrong’s suicide

He split with his reality TV star wife in June. She claims she was a victim of domestic abuse and is set to release a book about her experiences later this year.

In the opening of the new season of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, they filmed a special segment where they candidly talk about the businessman.

Anderson Copper asks the ladies on his show if reality TV is really the kind of forum they should be discussing his suicide in.

As well as the Housewives, the father of Amy Winehouse will give his first interview since the singer’s death where he reveals that his daughter had prescription drug Librium in her system when she died.

Librium is used to treat withdrawal symptoms during detox from alcoholism.

Mitch Winehouse tells Anderson Cooper that his daughter both drank to excess and detoxed to excess.
