Alcohol Detox Centers For Alcoholics

Alcohol detox centers serve one purpose – to medically treat and assist individuals through the process of alcohol withdrawal. The symptoms associated with alcohol withdrawal range from mild to severe, even life threatening. Mild symptoms include headache, nausea, anxiety, sweating, vomiting, light sensitivity and difficulty concentrating. Severe cases include all of the above and hallucinations.

Additionally, alcohol detox centers are an absolute necessity to address the most serious form of alcohol withdrawal, delirium tremens (DT’s). DT’s occur in patients suffering from chronic, long-term alcohol dependence. Fortunately, alcohol detox centers are equipped to comfort and ease the symptoms and possible dangerous effects that accompany the DT’s – disorientation, increased heart rate, pulse, and blood pressure, heightened agitation, continuing hallucinations and risk of seizures.

For those suffering with an alcohol addiction, alcohol detox centers also administer supportive care for medical conditions that often accompany alcohol dependence. These co-occurring medical conditions could cause complications during the detoxification process, which is dangerous from the start. The most common conditions alcohol detox centers witness are arrhythmia, vitamin deficiencies, low electrolytes, congestive heart failure, liver disease, internal bleeding and mental disorders.

Individuals entering alcohol detox centers are given thorough examinations and blood work to determine a course of action for appropriate treatment . Alcohol withdrawal, even when mild, can be extremely discomforting and painful. Patients are attended by highly trained detox medical staff, and are made to feel as comfortable as possible. Alcohol detox centers administer various medications to ensure the safety of the patients as they experience withdrawal symptoms.

The amount of time spent in alcohol detox centers varies, depending on the severity of an individual’s dependence upon alcohol. The average stay in an inpatient alcohol detox center is three to seven days, though a patient could need up to two weeks to withdraw from the drug.

Alcohol detox centers are completely separate entities from alcohol treatment centers and recovery centers. all recovery centers do not offer detox services, or they may charge an extra fee for the service. most every recovery facility requires that patients spend time in an alcohol detox center prior to being admitted into treatment to help with withdrawal symptoms.

Although alcohol detox centers do no offer rehab recovery programs, they do offer the patient education on alcohol dependency and abuse. More often, though, patients in alcohol detox centers are too busy dealing with their withdrawal symptoms to address anything recovery related. Recovery comes after the individual is well enough to function without serious risk or harm.

Outpatient Alcohol Detox Centers

Some alcohol rehab centers offer outpatient services and help those suffering withdrawal symptoms. This is available to those with mild to moderate alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Patients are assessed mentally and physically – if they fit specific criteria, outpatient detox services could be an option. Alcohol detox centers will closely monitor a patient’s withdrawal progress through daily or weekly visits by the patient to the facility. it is usually recommended that individuals have a sober family member or friend to aid in supporting the individual through what will be a significantly rough road. Sadly, less than 50 percent of patients undergoing outpatient services in alcohol detox centers do not go on to recovery programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous. Many continue on to drink again after withdrawal has concluded.

Inpatient alcohol detox centers are the safest way to treat alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Because all individuals experience withdrawal differently, it is impossible to predict how a patient will react to stopping the consumption of alcohol. if an individual has drunk large quantities of alcohol over a long period of time, the risk of seizures is high. This is why many alcohol detox centers only treat withdrawal on an inpatient basis, or hospital setting.

Unfortunately, the majority of individuals entering detox are not doing so by choice. in many cases they are brought to alcohol detox centers under life threatening circumstances. all too often, the disease of alcoholism reaches a breaking point, and an individual enters into a crisis situation. This is why alcohol detox centers exist, and this is when alcohol detox centers save lives.

Man wants rehab over Diet Cola 42 litres a week addiction

Darren Jones (Pic: Cavendish)

Darren Jones wants to check himself into rehab – to cure a bizarre addiction to Diet Cola.

Darren, 38, knocks back 42 litres of the drink every week.

Now the 35 stone father of two is vowing to get treatment for his £100 a week habit to get fit again and save his relationship with 33-year old mother of two Paula Mullen.

Darren, of Stockport, Greater Manchester, said: “I believe what I have is an actual addiction and I start to worry if I’m getting near the end of the bottle.

“If I can’t get in touch with Paula to get me some more I start to panic – it’s like a drug or alcohol addiction.

“I called up Diet Coke to ask them if it’s addictive and what I should do and she recommended putting water in it to dilute it, but it would taste horrid and I don’t think it would help.

“we joke that I should get one of those hats with bottles either side of my head and straws straight into my mouth so I can drink it all the time. It’s like gold, it’s my fuel.”

“I would love to to go into a rehab centre or boot camp or somewhere remote where I couldn’t get my hands on Diet Coke. As soon as I had the money to do it, a spell in rehab would be the first thing I’d spend it on.

“What’s worrying is the addiction gets so bad I did admit I would find it difficult to choose between my Diet Cola and Paula if I was told I could only take one item to a desert island.

“If I kicked the habit, I’d be very moody and even sick going cold turkey but it would be worth it for my Paula.

“at the moment I just feel like I’m a big bag of water I’m so full of fluid, so in 2012 things need to change, I need to go on a Diet Coke detox.”

Darren has been downing the equivalent of 18 cans a day for the last 10 years after he started drinking Diet Cola as a 13 year old boy when he helped out on Stockport market.

He added: I would drink a few cans a day but the full fat version made his teeth ‘furry’ so when the new diet version was launched I switched to that, ‘in the beginning it wasn’t so much of a problem but my weight just soared.”

He was eventually diagnosed with diabetes, high blood pressure and found it hard to move about and lost his job as a taxi driver in 2007.

Darren who has two children Abbie, aged seven and James, six said: “when I leave the house I have to have a bottle at all times and take it to parties in case there isn’t any on hand.

“Diet Coke was at my side when my children were born and my friends even pay me in Diet Coke’ for petrol money. If Paula and I were to get married he said he’d have to have a bottle close by.

“Paula constantly nags me and tells me to stop drinking so much, she makes excuses saying the shop has run out or she ‘forgot’ to get him some, but he will always find a way to get some – I ring and text her friends asking them to get me some.

“For Christmas my sister gave me two, two-litre bottles of Diet Coke and some slippers and for my birthday in July he got two twelve bumper packs of Diet Coke cans and a pillow from her. all my new years resolutions about giving it up have failed.”

He admits he has to have at least six litres a day, more in the summer, and buys the two or three litre bottles because they are cheaper.

Paula said: “I’d actually prefer him to go down the pub for a pint rather than down Diet Coke, at least it would be something different.

“I don’t let my son have it, although he loves it too. It makes him hyper and I’m worried the same thing might happen to him and he might become like his dad when he gets older. I can’t buy it in bulk as if I bought 14 litres it wouldn’t last the week – he’d drink it all at once.”

Dr Vicci Owen-Smith, NHS Stockport’s deputy director of public health, said: “Diet Coke is sweetened with the artificial sweetener aspartame and contains caffeine.

“Too much of either of these chemicals may cause harm. I would advise trying to cut down on the amount he drinks but not stopping suddenly.”

A Coca Cola spokesman said: “’Drinking more than 6 litres of any liquid exceeds guidance on daily fluid intakes by agencies such as the Food Standards Agency.

“Coca-Cola has a variety of drinks in a range a pack sizes. our packaging clearly shows caffeine, calorie and sugar content in relation to recommended daily guidelines.

“For those who prefer beverages made without sugar or caffeine, Coca-Cola offers a variety of options that give people choice, including many sugar-free and caffeine-free products. all of our drinks can be enjoyed in moderation as a part of a healthy diet and active lifestyle.”
