Cape Winelands Tour Spectacle
As a visitor on a Cape Winelands tour you need to be prepared and have done some research. Prepared in the sense that the person you are guided by is somewhat of an expert. The reason is very simple; there are too many choices and you need someone that can discern on your behalf. The wine community in the Cape is massive.
There are numerous regions within the province that produce international award winning wines. Names such as Nederburg, Constantia, Lanzerac and many others are among the more popular but the smaller vineyards manage to compete on the international circuit just as the major producers do.
Three distinct areas in the region generate amongst some of the finest wines in the world; these are the Klein Karoo, the Breede River valley and the Coastal region. The Coastal region comprises Paarl, Constantia and Stellenbosch. Groot Constantia founded in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, is regarded as the mother of all Cape vineyards. This active internationally recognised award winning farm is a national treasure and is under government protection.
Stellenbosch is probably the most visited area of all the regions in the Cape. It is named after one of the Dutch governors of the Cape, Simon van der Stel. Stellenbosch University is also situated here and is also regarded as a student town as the campus stretches throughout the town. KWV [Koperatieve Wijnbouwers Vereniging van Zuid-Afrika Beperkt] is head quartered here and is the organisation that brings all the producers together to collaborate to ensure quality products are manufactured in the region at high international standards.
Stellenbosch is popular for the parties and fairs it hosts throughout the foreign wine community beyond the regular farm stalls and bazaars that are frequently open to the passing trade and public. Often auctions are held where copious amounts of quality wine gets sold; often attracting the added discriminating palates from everywhere in the world as they are alert to the quality put on show.
Amazing wines, beautiful farms, vibrant vineyards and spectacular views are but a few of the splendid sights to see and take in during a wine tour of the Cape. Without the welcoming and dynamic people that look after it – it would not be the same.
