The World Of Wine.

Wine can be a complicated subject in the world. There are so many influences that can make a wine. Maybe that’s why people don’t give buying wine a second thought.

Like many out there i have been drinking wine for years. I am now at the stage where i want to understand what i am drinking. From my studies i have come across some key points and information that has helped me understand wine.

I hope these will help you as they did me:

1. Where do the names for new world and old world wine come from?

I have found through my research that new world wines name comes from the grape and old world wines come from the regions. For example what France calls white Burgundy, California call Chardonnay, yet both come from the same grape. This little bit of information will help you understand wine better as it did me.

2. Match food and wine together

This is something that I came across during my studies. Matching lighter wines with lighter foods and heavy wines with heavy foods, makes a big difference to a meal. Knowing which wines are good with which foods is a good thing to understand. Matching a Sauvignon Blanc with white fish is a good match but with beef does not work.

3. What can colour tell us about wine?

The colour of wine gives us an idea about the age of the wine. Take white wine, a young white will be a very light almost clear colour, a middle age white then turns more of a yellowish colour. And then a older white is more golden. A young red starts off a purple-blue red and moves to a orange colour as it ages. Finally it goes brown red as it is well aged.

4. Does the wine bottle help us?

It can help us know where the wine comes from. A soft- shouldered bottle is used for wines from Burgundy. Long-necked bottles and used for Alsatian and German wines. While a firm shouldered bottle will house wines from Bordeaux. Have a look next time you are shopping for wine.
